Biography

Ghalia Elsrakbi

Ghalia Elsrakbi, Syrian Artist, Graphic designer and researcher. She completed a BA Graphic Design at Artez Hogeschool voor de Kunst, Arnhem, followed by a Masters in Design at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. In 2009, she followed a research post-graduate at Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Since 2014 she is based in Cairo, Egypt where she teaches at the American University and German University, both in Cairo.

In 2009,Ghalia established Collective (Foundland) for Art and design research, together with Lauren Alexander South african Designer. Foundland’s work draws on visual arts, graphic design, research and text. They focus on a critical analysis of topics related to political land locational branding. In 2011, Foundland focuses on the Middle East especially on a critical analysis of topics related to political and locational branding through visual and written forms. Foundland’s work has been shown in exhibitions and festivals including Kadist Art Foundation, Paris 2012, Impakt Festival, Utrecht 2011, 2012, BAK Utrecht 2012, and Visual Arts Festival Damascus, Istanbul 2013. Recently Foundland is shortlisted for Prix de Rome 2015 the oldest and most prestigious award in the Netherlands for artists under the age of 40.
